Happy World Puppetry Day!

Here's some exciting news for people. As mentioned recently in ACTRA Alberta's newsletter, the local performers union just formed a puppeteering committee in the province!

The puppeteering community has always been strong in Alberta with world-renown companies like The Old Trout Puppet Workshop, the amazing marionette artist Ronnie Burkett, and the Festival of Animated Objects (which is going on right now). Puppetry, especially in film, has grown immensely due to large productions such as Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock and Joe Picket, which are a testament to the world-class talent we have to offer.

The puppeteers in Alberta have a diverse talent pool, including experience in hand puppets, animatronics, marionettes, digital puppetry, and motion & face capture.

The ACTRA Alberta Puppeteering Committee is looking to build on the following:

  • Plan training that could grow performers futures and sustainability.

  • Organize workshops and events to help develop community and talent.

  • Explore and promote the benefits of being union puppeteers, especially in regard to residuals, buyout, AI, and digital.

  • Promoting Alberta Puppeteers nationally as well as having outside productions use our local talent.

Hopefully you'll see more big news from us soon!
